Potter County is named in honor of James Potter, a
Pennsylvania general who was in the Continental Army during the American
Revolution.
It's another veteran of the Revolution, however
- Major Isaac Lyman - who
is recognized as the founder of Potter County. He was not only one of the
first permanent settlers to put down roots in this area, but he also negotiated
a deal where he was paid ten dollars for each settler he convinced to move to
Potter County. Major Lyman also built the first road across Potter County as
well as Potter County's first sawmill and gristmill. |

Cherry Springs State Park can be
found in Potter County, and it's offers sights that are literally out
of this world. That's because Cherry Springs is
the first International Dark Sky Park in the eastern United States. The gorgeous
night skies visible
from this park are so dark that the Milky Way itself casts a shadow across the
sky. These amazing sights not only draw astronomers all year-round, but also
many other patrons during the two
annual "star parties" held at the park. |

Cherry Springs is home to more than just
beautiful nights, however. Visitors can
wander hiking and biking trails, relax at
picnic facilities and rustic campsites,
snowmobile among the trees and catch sight
of a wide variety of impressive wildlife
that includes elk, bald eagles, owls,
porcupines, groundhogs, gray and red
squirrels, minks, chipmunks, bobcats, frogs
and more.
When the first weekend in August rolls
around, Cherry Springs is the place to watch
the annual Woodman's Show. For more
than 50 years, this show has celebrated
Potter County's lumber legacy. Events and
attractions at the three-day show include
tree-felling, cross-cutting, log rolling,
axe-throwing, standing block-chop, chainsaw
competitions, horse and tractor pulls,
live musical performances and historic
recreations of old logging camps.
